Edmonton International Airport

The Edmonton International Airport has an extensive signage manual that outlines their visual standards for wayfinding and signage (separate from the brand itself) throughout the airport. This also includes a section dedicated to the icons they use (mainly for signage and wayfinding) and what they represent. Often the signage manual and the EIA brand and brand guidelines overlap, where we would bring in the icon set into EIA branded elements. As the Edmonton International Airport was working towards upgrading their website, we wanted to make the site as accessible as possible with hopes of it being WCAG 2 compliant. This meant adding visual aids wherever possible!

The work for expanding the icon set began as a project for the website. And even today within the signage manual, it lists ALL the icons that EIA may use at some point, but also classifies them as to whether or not they are for web or brand only and to not be used for wayfinding. The base of EIA’s icon set is built from a universal AIGA set that is common to see within airports throughout the world. Things like washrooms, departures, taxi, ground transportation, restaurants, etc… Although for the website we needed to identify items that wouldn’t necessarily be a part of this icon set, but we still wanted them to match our existing icons! Visit the Edmonton International Airport website to see the icons in action. The icons made specifically for the website are shown below.
