Gate Information Display Screens

Edmonton International Airport

During the summer of 2019 the Canadian Transportation Agency introduced new Air Passenger Protection Regulations to better help and protect the passengers. As a result we were required to post both the new regulations in English and French throughout the airport and terminal so that our passengers could see them at any moment. The best solution for us meant utilizing our digital screens throughout the airport at any major touchpoint. Pre-security this was easy, we were able to add the digital screen within the rotation of important messaging for the passengers on our current digital screens. Post-security presented a larger challenge since the majority of the digital screens are used as Gate Information Displays (GIDS). The each airline was also required to have the new regulations present at both check-in counters and boarding gates.

We wanted to show the airlines our support and make sure the new regulations were always visible, especially at the boarding gates, by having the information present on the GIDS digital screens. As a result this meant re-evaluating our current screens and seeing what could be removed to make room for the Air Passenger Protection Regulations. This gave me the opportunity to also completely redesign our GIDS to ensure that they matched our current wayfinding signage throughout the airport so that passengers looking for a specific gate will have an easier time identifying their location on the screen. The end result had me building a new structure and grid for these screens where the gate number increased in size, making it easier for the passenger to spot, as well as using the same guidelines for colours and typography as our printed wayfinding and signage throughout the airport.

One per gate. These screens allow all the essential information to be present. Focusing on what the passenger needs to know. Their gate number, airline, destination location, flight number, and status.

Split Screens

Gate 49 is unique at Edmonton International Airport. It physically looks like there is only 4 counters/screens for the gates, but they are actually split. So in total there is 8 boarding gates. This means that the 1920x1080 digital screens are also split and most provide multiple boarding screens if ALL flights are active.
